Welcome to author Ryan Hoffman who has just released his first book, “Murder & Old Books”, a Riley Morgan cozy mystery.

Describe your current writing spot or space.

I usually find myself sitting in my room with my tablet and keyboard on my desk. I turn off my Facebook Messenger as I’m writing a draft to minimize distraction. I have a cup of coffee or iced tea nearby to keep me going.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing? I try to balance both my day job and writing?

I usually write a couple of hours a day or until I have 2,000 words written.

How long on average does it take you to write a book?

Two months, give or take a few days.

How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have?

None, this is my first novel.

What comes first for you, the plot or characters?

It’s usually the characters with me. I come up with my characters to tell the story and then add in the details after that. I believe that more work should be put into the main cast of characters.

How do you select the names of your characters?

I’m not the most creative with names. I have to use name generators online. I knew I was going to call my main character, Riley, and his cop girlfriend, Dani.

Can you hear your characters talking?

What kind of research do you do for a book?

I grew up in a small town and have read cozies before. I used that for police work, bookselling, etc. I also looked online about what a barista does. The rest is pure imagination.

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot/avatar/spirit animal?

A dog.

What would you say is your interesting writing quirk?

I tend to re-edit every sentence.

What was the best money you ever spent as a writer?

My membership to Sisters in Crime.

What do you like to do when you’re not writing?

Reading – a lot!

Do you ever Google yourself?

What is your favorite childhood book(s)?

I liked the Hardy Boys and Sherlock Holmes.

If you could tell your younger writing self anything, what would it be?

Keep at it and don’t give up.

Ryan Hoffman has always had a deep passion for writing. He has a degree in Criminal Justice. He is a member of Sisters in Crime and the Guppy Chapter of Sisters in Crime. He has held a lot of jobs which bring him a lot of experience to add to his cozy mystery novels. Those range from currently working in a cafeteria to working as a stocking clerk in a grocery store. He has always had a soft spot for Mysteries since reading his first Hardy Boys we’re Nancy Drew book as a child. He graduated to devouring Agatha Christie and other mystery writers in his adult years. He currently lives in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, but grew up in a small town similar to the ones he writes about.
