Welcome to author Alisa H. Klinger who comes to us from Florida by way of New York. (Don’t you just love her accent?) Thanks for taking time to chat with us!

Describe your favorite writing spot.

My favorite writing spot is at my desk that overlooks the Gulf of Mexico. I love the calmness and focus I obtain there. At my desk, there is always a cup of coffee and inspirational quotes. I usually have classical music playing in the background.

What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?

When I write, I start in the morning and work for a few hours. I always leave myself with an idea for the next day’s writing. This motivates me to go back the next morning ready to write. I will spend the afternoon, either researching or reading. I find this helps my creative juices and prepares me for another morning of writing.

How much time do you spend on research before you start the book? While writing?

I do a great deal of research before I ever start writing a book. I am extremely thorough. I find that researching helps me plot out the story while providing me with material to write. It is my goal to create a book where the reader is both intrigued and interested. I want them to be entertained as well as learning some fun facts. You know, great conversation material for cocktail party talk! To answer part two of this question, I continue to research as I’m writing. I feel this sparks my writing and helps me with writer’s block.

What comes first, plot or character?

For me it is the plot. A story idea comes to me and then I create the characters. I love the characters I create. I love adding quirks and traits that make them relatable. I find the characters help to move the plot along.

Can you hear your characters talking?

My characters are my best friends, they talk to me all the time.

What was the best money you spent as a writer?

For me, as an Indie Author, I would have to say that investing money to hire a graphic designer was the best money I spent. I feel that collaborating with a specialist for my book cover led to an intriguing and well-polished cover. I am very pleased with the cover of my debut mystery thriller, The Perfect Move. I love that since the book’s release this past June 2021, the cover has attracted a great deal of attention. So, much so that I even have readers sending me photos of themselves with the book cover. There is currently a Reader Challenge involving the cover. It is called #theperfectmovechallenge. It has readers taking their perfect move picture replacing their eyes with the eyes that are on the cover of the book. To see exactly what I am talking about you can go to my Instagram page @followmywritingjourney or my Facebook page Alisa Klinger.

What do you like to do when not writing?

I enjoy playing Pickleball and walking on the beach.

What would you say is an interesting writing quirk?

A quirk I have is that whenever I need to process my writing I go to sleep. I usually wake up with a solution!

As a writer, what would you choose as your mascot?

I think an owl would be my mascot. Wise and mysterious.

How long on average does it take to write a book?

It takes me 18 months.

How many unpublished books do you have?

I have many completed children picture books that are not published along with the first draft of my second book, which will have some characters returning from the first book.

Alisa H. Klinger, author of The Perfect Move, has worn many hats before putting on her author’s cap. They include New York City teacher—Talented and Gifted Specialist—and New York State Licensed Real Estate Associate Broker. The Perfect Move is her debut novel.

Everyone starts somewhere, and for Alisa it began with making up bedtime stories for her two wonderful sons. Alisa has always enjoyed creating stories where she puts herself in other people’s shoes. This passion has helped her create colorful, well-developed characters that readers truly become invested in and care about. Alisa admits she’s become very attached to the characters in The Perfect Move.

When Alisa is not writing, she spends time with her family, plays Pickleball, takes long walks on the beach, and explores grand estates.

Alisa currently lives on Longboat Key, Florida, with her supportive husband. They have two amazing sons who they are extremely proud of. Alisa grew up in Queens, New York, and raised her family in a quiet Long Island suburb of Dix Hills. Even though it’s been a few years since she’s lived in New York, she hasn’t lost her accent—which puts a smile on many Floridian’s faces whenever they hear her ask for a cup of cawfee! You can take the girl out of New York…but you can’t take NY out of the girl.
