Welcome to author M.K. Stabley who took time away from her various hobbies AND her writing to answer a few questions for us.
Describe your favorite writing spot.
My favorite writing spot is sitting in a small coffee/gelato cafe that was in downtown Delaware, Ohio called Ciao Cafe. The smell of espresso alone kept me going, along with the wonderful people that owned it.
Describe your current writing spot or space.
My current writing spot is in one of the five bedrooms we now have in our rental house in Georgia until our new house is finished being built. I have a bookshelf stuffed with books on one wall, my desk with a laptop on another, and my exercise bike. I had posters made of my book covers framed and they are on the wall. They keep me motivated to keep writing.
My husband and I are the only ones in this house, so we both picked which rooms we wanted for our respective offices, being that he is still currently working from home, as well.
I know this space is temporary, but I’m enjoying it while I can. Once we move into our new house, I’m going to have to find my new spot.
How long on average does it take you to write a book?
On average, it takes me anywhere from four to six months to write one book. That includes research, finishing edits, and formatting. My last book, A Killer Cut was the exception; it took five years and a global pandemic for me to finish it.
I was working as a manager/receptionist at a salon close to 30 hours/week and still had a child in high school, for part of that five years. When the pandemic hit, we were shut down for two months and I had nothing but time, so that’s what I did, I finished the first draft, edited it, formatted, and published it. I’d say my time was well spent.
What is your work schedule like when you’re writing?
My writing schedule tends to vary, but I try to spend an average of 4-6 hours a day working on my current projects, Mon-Fri., but it also depends on how well the words are flowing. I really try to leave Saturday and Sunday open to spend with my husband, plus it gives me time to refresh. We all need that.
What do you like to do when you’re not writing?
When I am not writing, I love to read. I read a plethora of genres; I’m not partial to just one. You will find my husband and I cooking together every evening, usually it will be one of our low carb concoctions we’ve found off of Pinterest, but I am an avid baker, too. And we love to travel, preferably where it is sunny and warm. If I can spend time outside, I’ll do it. I love hiking.
What are your favorite genres?
The genre I really connect with as a writer would be mystery and suspense. I tend to add in a little supernatural ability into my characters though, too. I have a new book coming out in July, that will be more of a paranormal/romance/mystery, called “Visions of Murder.” It is set in and around Flagstaff and Sedona, Arizona. If something supernatural is going to happen, that is the area it will happen in. I lived in Arizona for seven years, and the Sedona area is a playground for the supernatural with its vortexes and Native American land.
M.K. currently resides in Georgia, with her amazing husband of many years, and they have one son who is currently attending The Ohio State University. When she isn’t writing, she is either reading, cooking, baking, or, did I say, reading… 🙂 She loves books. You can find her reading multiple genres, including mystery, suspense, action, romance, paranormal, and even military thriller/romance.
